New Members Making an Impact at JG4PD

2013 has been a great year thus far with 4 or 5 races already under the belt for a small group of Just Giver Riders.

A few that make up this group are Brad and Jim, new to the club and new to cycling. I am very proud that this club is looked to and become the club that people find and join as they see no attitude or ego, just a bunch of great people that love cycling and love to push each other with ego and attitude aside. Looks like we will reach approximately 40 active members this year so we look forward to some great rides both in Vancouver and the White Rock area.

Thanks again for all the support and help to continue the vision. NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER SURRENDER, NEVER FORGET.

Just Giver Represents at the Spring Series Races!

Spring Series racing is here, so does that mean it is finally Spring in BC? HA! Not likely judging by years past, but 2013 has been kind to the local bike racers so far in the 3 races held to date. JG4PD members, Kelly, Brad, Jim, & Rob have represented the club in the B & C group with some “so-far-o-good” results! All racers have avoided crashes and survived! Race #1 in Aldergrove saw the racers crack at various points during the race on a short but steep ramp that took its toll at high pace after a number of laps. Last Saturday’s race in Fort Langley saw new racers Brad & Jim almost finish the race in the C Group and a HUGE increase in their confidence level! NICE WORK GENTS! In the B Group, Kelly & Rob represented the club by making the first two breakaways only to have a third break escape without a JG4PD representative. Rob settled with a top 20 finish in the main bunch. Will work on getting in the break at our next race!

All in All… good fun was had, some competition, and some excellent LT workouts! Come and join in on the fun….

First Race of the 2013 Season Down

After months of training in the cold and wet roads of Greater Vancouver it was great to go out and measure the work that has been done. The venue for this measuring stick was the Frostbite 20km Time Trial in Carnation, Washington (just outside of Redmond) on Saturday February 23rd.

Just Giver 4PD members Kelly Jablonski & Rob Thompson participated in the CAT 3 event while Brad Dean raced the retro category. The rain held off for the most part but as expected for any event in February in the Pacific Northwest, it was cold! An even further challenge when racing against the clock where being as aero as possible is key, so we all had to be rather selective about clothing to balance the aero part of the equation with not freezing one’s butt off. We knew that the suffering would be hard but fast, with our goal times to be at the approx 31-32 minute mark to compare with average times at this event over years past; so we minimized our gear knowing the warmth of the JG4PD truck would be there for us at the finish.

The course was a U-Shaped overall flat track that traveled from US202 onto rural farm roads where barns, cows, and streams were prevalent. Road quality was great and the organization of the event even better. Although none of the JG4PD made the podium in our categories, we were all happy with our times considering it had been a year since we had been on our TT bikes, and it was the first race EVER for new member to the team, Brad. Kelly and Rob nailed the 32 minute mark within 4 seconds of one another, and Brad hit a time just over 34 minutes on his steel steed. Nice, considering the field was filled with seasoned time trial specialists & triathletes riding 5 figure $ bikes.

This is a fantastic event to start of the season and some of us look forward to returning to this course when they run it again later in the season. Now bring on the SPRING SERIES!

Time for Some Expert Advice

So once in a while we all have to make changes not only to better our chances to increase fitness but also to increase our interest and motivation to train and ride! After a horrendous 2012 trying to recover and train at the same time I though it would be fun this year to get some expert advice. This base line testing is meant to give an athlete Aerobic Heart Rate zones that will the be targeted to properly train and gain the fitness for the Trans Alp race. The main objectives also for this test is to find out VO2 max and also Anerobic and Lactate thresholds which vary for many differet reasons. With proper HR zone traning all of these levels can be increased which means better performance. Next test will be done in 12 weeks then again just after Trans Alp.

Santa Barbara Training Camp

Its always nice to get out of rainy cold Vancouver for a mid winter mini camp to help start of 2013 and get the legs a bit back into shape. Kelly and Rob headed down to Santa Barbara for 3 days of riding with our host CJ. Even a 100km in the rain on Sunday did not dampen our spirits and we were able to get in 270km of great training and nearly 4,500 meters of elevation gain over the 3 days. If you ever want to visit a great location with great riding Santa Barbara is the place.

A huge thanks to Mitch from www.santabarbarafitnesstours.com for setting us up on top notch Giant rental bikes and for ther hotel drop off and pick up! We will be back soon!!!!!!!!

A great year behind us and another big year ahead for all the Just Giver 4PD crew. A small group of us got out to start the new year off with a cold and chilly 60km ride. As cold as it was it makes you feel good to start the year of on such a positive note.
