In 2006, cyclists Kelly Jablonski and Branko Radmilovic organized the first Just Giver for Parkinson’s, when they decided to turn their planned bike trip into a fundraiser for Parkinson’s Disease. The pair rode 400 kilometers from Vancouver to Osoyoos, and raised $25,000.
Over the next four years, Just Giver grew, adding distance, days, and riders. For Just Giver 2010, Branko, Kelly, and 11 other riders covered 1,350 kilometers over ten days, raising $95,000 for Parkinson Society British Columbia and the Davis Phinney Foundation. Along the way, the team visited six PSBC support groups while passing through Whistler, Lillooet, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Kelowna, Osoyoos, Westbank, Merritt, and Hope.
Since its inception, Just Giver has raised $280,000 for Parkinson’s research and support services - a testament to your generosity and support!
In 2008, Just Giver added to the yearly ride with a blog on our home page, where news about the team, Parkinson’s, and other stories of interest are posted. The blog is an important part of Just Giver, letting us connect with those living with Parkinson’s, and making the fight a year round one.
For 2011, the team will be taking a break from the annual big trip, and will instead be focused on turning Just Giver into a registered cycling club. This will allow the team to spread awareness and fight Parkinson’s all over Western Canada. Stayed tuned for more information on how you could become part of Just Giver 2011!
It is estimated that there are approximately 1.6 million Parkinson sufferers in North America and this number is expected to double as the baby boomer generation ages
